A New Jersey native, Brenner cut his teeth in the local jazz scene, sharing the stage with legends like Sonny Stitt, George Coleman, and Philly Joe Jones while still a student at Rutgers. He went on to tour the world with Lionel Hampton’s Orchestra, performing alongside jazz royalty like Milt Jackson, Dizzy Gillespie, Elvin Jones, and Wynton Marsalis.
